What characters convert to subscript?

Unicode defines a subscript form for all 26 letters, digits 0–9, and five math symbols (+ − = ( )). Not every letter has a genuine dedicated subscript glyph — c, f, g, w, y, and z fall back to their superscript form as the closest available visual match, since Unicode never defined true subscript versions of those six letters. Every other letter uses a real subscript glyph, and capital letters convert using the same form as lowercase, since Unicode has no separate uppercase subscript series.

What's the difference between subscript and superscript?

Both shift characters away from the baseline, just in opposite directions. Subscript lowers characters below the line, as in chemical formulas like H₂O or CO₂. Superscript raises them above the line, the standard style for exponents (x²) and footnote markers. Both use complete Unicode ranges for letters, digits, and the same five math symbols.
