An Unbiased Letter, Picked for You
Click Randomise on either panel and get a single letter back — Latin (A-Z) on the left, Cyrillic (А-Я, 33 letters) on the right. Useful for spelling drills, word games, classroom activities, or any time you need a starting letter that nobody in the room picked.
Every letter in the alphabet has exactly the same chance of coming up. That sounds obvious, but it's harder than it looks — people asked to "pick a random letter" reliably favor a handful of familiar ones, which is exactly the bias this tool avoids.
How is the letter picked?
The tool uses the browser's built-in random number generator to pick an index into the alphabet — 26 possibilities for Latin, 33 for Cyrillic — so every letter has an equal 1-in-26 (or 1-in-33) chance on each click. There's no weighting toward common letters and no memory of what was picked last time.
What can I use a random letter for?
- Word games — Scattergories and similar games use a random letter to set the round; this gives a fair pick that neither player controls.
- Classroom activities — phonics drills, "name three words starting with this letter," or handwriting practice sheets that need to cover the alphabet without repeats.
- Creative writing prompts — write a paragraph where every sentence starts with the generated letter; the constraint tends to produce more interesting choices than writing without one.
- Password building — combine random letters with numbers and symbols for a memorable-but-unpredictable base, or use the password generator for a ready-made one.
How often does each letter actually appear in English?
For comparison, here's roughly how often each letter shows up in typical English text. This tool doesn't use these frequencies — every letter has an equal chance regardless of how common it is in real writing.
| Letter | Frequency | Letter | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| E | ~12.7% | N | ~6.7% |
| T | ~9.1% | S | ~6.3% |
| A | ~8.2% | H | ~6.1% |
| O | ~7.5% | R | ~6.0% |
| I | ~7.0% | D | ~4.3% |
The least common letters are Z (~0.07%), Q (~0.10%), and X (~0.15%) — if this tool weighted by frequency, you'd wait a long time to see any of them.
